Brainwave Entrainment How to Create Binaural Beats

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

In this article, I am going to explain how to create binaural beats and how you can use them to enhance meditation. You most likely already know that different states of consciousness are associated with different brainwave frequencies. What you may not know is that by modulating brainwave activity, you can induce altered states of consciousness – and you can do this cheaply and easily, from the comfort of your own home. In fact, the only equipment you will need is a few audio files and a pair of headphones.

How to create binaural beats

Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, a physicist who lived in the nineteenth century, discovered that two tones of slightly different pitches played continuously – one to each ear – will cause the listener to experience a pulsing “beat” which corresponds to the different in pitch between the two sounds. Dove named this pulsing sound a binaural beat. To make this clearer to you, look at the following example:

Imagine that you put on your headphones, and through the right speaker you play a tone of around 10hz frequency (the frequency of a sound is just another word for its pitch). Through the left ear, you play a tone of around 15hz frequency – a pitch 5hz higher than the tone heard by the right ear. You will not hear two distinct tones – you will hear a single, pulsing tone, wavering between 10 and 15hz. This 5hz pulse is the binaural beat.

How to use binaural beats

Listening to binaural beats will cause the frequency of your brain activity to synchronise with that of the beat. For example, listening to tones of a 5hz difference in frequency (as in the example above) would cause a person’s brainwaves to fall to around 5hz. This would induce a theta state (theta brainwaves being between 4 and 7hz) – a deep trance during which dreamlike visuals are likely to appear.

Binaurals thus provide an effective way to induce altered states of consciousness by modulating brainwave activity. They are also an effective way to deepen trance and intensify meditative practices. You may be skeptical about these claims. However, perhaps the best thing about binaural beats is that you can try them out for yourself from the comfort of your own home. Why not download some binaural beat mp3s and try them out for yourself?

How to create binaural beats for free

Although there is so many cheap files out there that it is really not worth the effort of trying to make your own binaural beats, you can do so if you wish. You will need some synthesizer software, or some other way of generating two continuous tones. Simply play one tone through the left channel, and another tone through the right channel. Make the second tone deeper or higher than the first, by the number of hertz that you wish to entrain your brainwaves to.

For example, suppose to want to induce an alpha state. Alpha brainwaves have a frequency of 8 to 12hz, so the second tone will need to be 8 to 12hz deeper or higher pitched then the first tone. Then listen to the two tones through headphones. It is important to note that for the effect to work, the difference between the two tones must be less than 30hz, and neither tone can have a frequency of more than 1000hz.

Although this information is all that is needed for you to know how to create binaural beats for yourself, you may also need information on the correspondences between brainwave frequencies and states of consciousness. But that is information for another article.
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

This ‘frequency following’ response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ‘entrain’ to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.

On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.

Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.

THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ‘mind-tripping’, enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.

While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.

We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person’s starting position, entrainment can be rather ‘hit and miss’.

If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you’re probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain’s strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.

In this article you will discover some simple tips and advice on how you can fall asleep easily. Generally insomnia sufferers complain of not being able to relax physically and mentally enough to sleep. Often they experience a ‘racing mind’ at night. Those racing, relentless thoughts seem never ending and by the time the mind starts to quieten, it’s the morning. For the insomniac this has become a nightly routine.

So what can we do to counter this frustrating problem? The first thing to do is to seek professional medical advice. Secondly refrain from using sleeping pills, they should be the last thing on your mind. Why? Because pills are addictive and can cause ‘rebound insomnia’. Furthermore they will actually create more problems, impairing physical and mental functions. In fact in a recent survey it revealed that a group of insomniacs given a placebo, performed and slept better than those given sleeping pills.

Thirdly, realize that there is no such thing as a quick-fix solution. We’ve become a nation obsessed with quick-fixes. Insomnia can not be fixed with just a pop of the pill. Sleeping pills do not tackle the underlying cause of insomnia and you will not attain the same benefits of natural sleep. This is because the chemicals found in most majo pills affect normal brainwave patterns and inhibit the mind from falling into the deeper restorative stages of sleep.

One of the most important steps to tackling insomnia is to pay attention to your sleep habits. This means, getting up and sleeping the same time every night. Ensuring that you expose yourself to light (preferably natural) in the day and winding down in the evenings before sleep. Try meditation in the evening and listening to relaxing music.

It’s important to exercise the mind and body in the day. This can often have a sedating effect on the mind and body and help you to gain deeper sleep. Ensure that your bedroom is cool, quiet and dark, and that your bed is comfortable and supportive. When you are in bed, focus your attention on relaxing your body from your head to your toe.

Try to be as relaxed as possible in the day and don’t let stress, anxiety and worry get the better of you. Avoid stimulants like caffeine and cigarettes in the day. Caffeine may give you an initial boost, however it is short-lived and will more than likely affect your sleep as caffeine stays in the body for more than 5 hours. Try drinking a calming drink such as chamomile tea.

Pay attention to your diet and ensure that you are taking a quality supplement containing calcium and magnesium. If you are suffering from low moods in the day consider St Johns Worts, which is a herbal remedy used for mild to moderate depression. Also consider Ginseng and Ginkgo Biloba which help improve concentration during the day. As will all medication and remedies regardless if they are natural or not, professional medical advice should be sought.

There are also highly effective non-pharmaceutical techniques to consider to help you relax, train your mind and improve your sleep habits. Techniques such as hypnosis, CBT and NLP have been proven with highly effective results.

I hope you enjoyed this article and found it useful. Stay tuned for more articles to help you fall asleep.

Brainwave Entrainment ADD – Alternative Treatments

In this article we’re going to discuss some alternative treatments for someone suffering from ADD.

Unfortunately some people suffering from ADD cannot handle taking medication, either for psychological or physical reasons. For these people their only recourse is taking an alternative path.

There are many alternative treatments for ADD. We’ll be going over the most common.

One way to treat a person who has ADD is through what is called behavioral modification or intervention. This is a direct negative or positive reinforcement of the behavioral changes we want to have take hold in the child. For example, a child in class who never raises his hand before asking a question might be given a small reward by the teacher for restraining himself enough to raise his hand before asking the question. This is reinforced over and over until it becomes second nature to the child. In other words, the child learns to raise his hand in class before asking a question. Even if the child still blurts out the question after raising his hand he is still rewarded for raising his hand to begin with. It’s a small step but an important one. The theory behind this is that rewarding the struggle towards changing the child’s behavior encourages the new full behavior.

Another alternative treatment for ADD is the use of neurofeedback. This is where electrodes are attached to the scalp so the patient can actually see the brainwaves working. By doing this he can see the effect on his brain of staying calm in a given situation. This way he can learn to slow down or speed up brain waves.

Another thing that can be done is to hook up an interactive metronome to the patient. This metronome will assist the person suffering from ADD in focusing his attention through sound and movement patterns. This is supposed to also have a calming effect on the patient.

Then there is EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique. This involves stimulating specific acupressure points while speaking certain words that reinforce behavior. This seems to trigger changes in the neurological system.

Another form of therapy is what they call “Animal Assisted Therapy” or AAT. This is the practice of getting a pet for the child to pet and even to take care of. This teaches the child responsibility and keeps his mind occupied. Many children who care for pets become more self regulated and calmer.

A very effective form of treatment is the small specialized classroom. These classrooms fill in gaps in learning that the child may have missed in his regular classroom, because of frequent outbursts. These classrooms incorporate learning with periods of vigorous physical activity, opportunities for success, and attention and reward for every accomplishment. These classrooms also provide naps for proper sleep and good food for proper nutrition.

In the final article in this series we are going to discuss how parents can cope with a child suffering from ADD and what support groups they have available to them.

In this article we will explore the link between our state of mind, learning and sustainable peak performance. The purpose of this exploration is to help you keep improving and maximise performance with the least amount of effort,

There are three critical elements to learning and mastering something new:

Knowledge,
Skills
Desire

All three elements need to be present. E.g. we can gain the knowledge of what to do, but if we don’t have the necessary willingness to do whatever is necessary, we won’t learn the ‘how’ and develop the skill.

The most important part, however, is having and maintaining your level of desire, which I would express as a willingness, intention and tenacity applied to the practices of what you have now learned – the ‘whatever it takes’ commitment (or ‘WIT’ as I call it) which involves honing the new knowledge, awareness and skills until they become a natural part of life.

The degree to which all parts are present and coincide is related to the extent of effective learning that takes place and is embedded.

G.S.O.H.

Something else which is helpful when learning anything challenging is a good sense of humour, especially if what we are learning can at times seem to make us feel like an expert one day and a complete beginner again the next – just like golf. At times like this, it’s very helpful to be able to see the funny side of things. The huge variance in how we feel about our ability from one day to the next can be seen as both amazing and funny. It’s also a great opportunity to learn some humility and learn to let go of the need to be in control – i.e. changing our state of mind.

State of mind link to learning

Our state of mind is the fourth crucial element of which I have never seen explored in this way before: i.e. that our state of mind influences how well we learn. It actually underpins our whole ability to learn (i.e. to notice, understand, absorb and remember) and it influences the type of learning possible.

Accessing a clear state of mind and being fully present is a huge enabler for learning. This was a big revelation for my golf coach, Paul, as we discussed what he was noticing about my learning. He noticed how I stayed calm and picked things up quickly by staying calm and focussed, even when I was struggling.

He also noticed I was aware of the subtle cues that helped me learn and how I was able to give him guidance on what helped me. Paul has subsequently completely overhauled the way he teaches his clients. As he has learnt more about the link between the state of mind and learning, he has developed the ability to recognise states within people that render them temporarily unable to learn and learned how to bring them back to a performance state quickly.

Now when clients arrive for their lessons in a very busy, distracted or agitated state of mind, he spends the first part of the lesson helping them adjust into a clear state of mind by letting go ‘of their day’ so they are then able to focus and learn something.

This clearer state of mind also enables us to access a different way of learning, and depending on whether it’s in the middle of performing (especially on the golf course) after the event or practicing on the range, there are different ways of learning to optimise both our learning and our performance.

Using the optimum mode for learning

Understanding the different ways of learning for both the conscious, intellectual state of mind and the clear peak performance mind and how learning comes to our awareness in different ways in each state of mind is important, so that we can match the best form of learning to where we are e.g. on the range or on the course (or pondering a work problem or in a meeting). As we shall see the form of learning before, during and after a game also needs to be different for best results.

The way we tend to learn typically is using the intellect and analytical skills we have honed so well at school and in the work world. Conscious or intellectual learning is great at analysing the past and seeing patterns or themes from information, but only for limited amounts of information. It is only truly effective when all the necessary data is present. However, have you ever experienced “paralysis by analysis” i.e. where you have spent too long trying to analyse a problem? Sometimes there can be too much data or inadequate data for arriving at a solution purely with the intellect.

You will no doubt also have noticed how sometimes if you stop thinking hard about a problem and perhaps move on to something else, new thoughts and solutions just surface unbidden, rather than having to think of them consciously. This is when you are in the flow state of mind. In this state of mind our clearer awareness of information around us and within us results in us noticing things we ordinarily missed because we are preoccupied in our thinking.

Scientists have recently studied the brainwaves linked to problem-solving and discovered (by attaching probes to the skull) that when a new solution to a problem is ‘seen’ it is at a lot lower signal strength than that which is typical of our intellectual thinking. It seems that if our thinking does not quieten down, there is too much mental noise in our mind to ‘hear’ the new solution.

When we learn to flex and shift between our intellectual state of mind and a clearer ‘in flow’ peak performance state of mind, as we learn (to do by letting go of unhelpful thoughts and focus) in the first part of the book (available from my website, search ‘Home – Success Is a Mind Game’), we also have a chance of noticing or learning something new which we wouldn’t have seen had we remained in our typically busy, intellectual state of mind.

In this article we are going to quickly discuss how you can become psychic. If you are anything like me, you are MAJORLY attracted the proposition of becoming more intuitive, developing your psychic energies, and simply entering into the wild and woolly mystery that lies beyond the ordinary! Here are the simple steps I recommend to all of my readers on how THEY can begin the amazing adventure on their own! Read on..:-)

Step 1: Start Meditating. Yes, it’s true. Meditation is without question the biggest gateway to the cultivation of advanced awareness and intuition. All insights come from SOME level of altered states of consciousness, and to get there, you need to go “inside” to find them!

Step 2: Create Clear Intentions. You need to cultivate clarity of purpose to have truly develop psychic skills. No selfish motivations are going to help you here – you need to have a transcendent sense of something greater than yourself!

Step 3: Hemi-Sync or Bi-nural Beat Sound Technology: Simply stated, if you REALLY want to leap frog the learning curve and developmental ditches that will impeded your psychic progress, you need to “train your brain” to enter advanced states of psychic awareness fast. Sounds that entrain the brainwaves to “tune in” to frequencies outside of the normal range are ONE very powerful way of getting there!

Step 4: Practice, practice, practice! The simple truth is that ANYONE can develop profoundly powerful psychic experiences, and in a hurry! If you simply follow the steps above, you will be WELL ahead of lots of the other pretenders who NEVER make their psychic aspirations a reality.. 🙂

In these times of intensive use of computers and long periods of labor keeping the same position working with them, suffering from fibromyalgia or chronic pain is not a rare condition in workers. Even worse, the fibromyalgia syndrome can become serious disadvantage affecting the job performance of the sufferer and in this way reducing her competitiveness and putting in risk her job position. For that reason, in this article I will share with the readers some thoughts about fibromyalgia, common treatments used to relieve it, and finally the use of brainwave entrainment as natural alternative as a fibromyalgia treatment.

The main problem related with suffering from fibromyalgia or chronic pain at work are the symptoms, they can interfere with labor activities avoiding the worker to achieve her peak performance or even worse; not working at all. In fact, common symptoms include obviously pain, weakening fatigue, sleep disorder, and joint rigidity. Some patients may also report difficulty with deglutition, numbness and tingling, bowel and vesicle anomalies, and the worst symptom: cognitive deterioration.

Doctors say that fibromyalgia syndrome or chronic pain has not a clear cause or causes. Fibromyalgia also is difficult to diagnose, that’s why some members of the medical community do not consider fibromyalgia as a disease because the absence of physical abnormalities, objective diagnostic tests, and extensive superposition with other diagnosis such as chronic fatigue syndrome. However, several studies based on tomography have shown proof for neurological differences between fibromyalgia sufferers and healthy people. These studies have shown hyper sensibility in the perception of the pain by the brain of the patient. Thus, by reducing this hyper sensibility in the brain, the sufferer, in most cases, can get a great relief from fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia has no acknowledged cure or a common treatment because it is still an unknown medical syndrome. Treatments are driven only on symptom management. Research of the physiology and psychology of fibromyalgia have discovered treatments from diverse origin such as medicines, cognitive-behavioral therapies, exercises, and alternative and complementary medicine. Indeed, when these treatments are integrated, they have been shown to be more effective in alleviating pain and other symptoms than single treatments.

In addition, a promising natural alternative for fibromyalgia treatment is Brainwave Entrainment. Indeed, sessions based on brainwave entrainment help you to reduce not only the pain perception of the brain but also in the long term you can train your brain to naturally produce the brainwave patterns to alleviate this symptom. Moreover, in the long term you can reduce the dose of medicines needed to relieve fibromyalgia and even avoid drugs at all if you train your brain with this therapy.

A typical brainwave entrainment session for fibromyalgia and chronic pain reduction, consists of an MP3 file with special sounds (binaural beats) at the range of Sub-Delta (0 – 1 hz) frequencies, which seem to have soothing effects on the limbic system (the amygdala and hypothalamus), which themselves operate at delta frequencies. Theoretically, this is the reason delta frequencies are so helpful with conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic pain, as well as hypertension.

Furthermore, stimulating the brain with Alpha waves (10 – 14 hz) also induces an increase in the release of serotonin, the body’s own pain relief drug, and it has been shown to help in the relief of certain types of bodily pain and ailments such as fibromyalgia and headache. Brainwave entrainment also helps in the physical healing processes as well as improving the immune system. The best of this therapy is the easiness of it use. It consists only on lying down in your sofa or bed, close your eyes, and listen the therapy for 15 minutes or more. That’s all.

In summary, fibromyalgia or chronic pain interfere the work performance of laborers. Given that fibromyalgia syndrome or can be considered as a pain hyper sensibility, by reducing deeply the brain’s activity you will get a quick relief from this affliction. Therefore, a therapy based on Brainwave Entrainment is an excellent complement or even alternative to those based on drugs. Remember: the more you listen to the therapy, the more effective it is in the long term.

In these difficult times it is challenging to maintain one’s self-confidence. The loss of a job, for example, can be devastating to the ego. Fortunately there is an easy way to reprogram yourself and regain your self-confidence. That method is to use brainwave entrainment.

Brainwave entrainment is a process that utilizes binaural beat recordings to enter the subconscious mind and instill confidence building thoughts.

As a background, the brain has been found to function in four states of frequency ranges; beta, alpha, theta, and delta. Beta is the highest and most active, while theta and delta are the lowest. It is within these lowest ranges that the subconscious mind can be entered and reprogrammed.

This is similar to the meditation methods that are practiced in yoga and Tai Chi. However, learning to meditate effectively can take a lot of instruction and hours of practice. Listening to binaural beats recordings is a way to shorten this process. Binaural beats do not replace the total meditative process, but just make it a lot easier.

Binaural beats work by introducing two different frequencies into each ear while wearing stereo headphones. The brain “hears” this frequency differential and adjusts itself, or “entrains”, to the lower frequencies of theta and delta. These are the most relaxed states and this is where meditation takes place.

By listening to binaural beats recordings that are specifically designed with subliminal messages for confidence building, it is possible to awaken from these meditative sessions with renewed confidence and energy. You will find yourself taking a more positive outlook on life and being better able to confront your life’s problems and find solutions.

Your friends and co-workers will notice an immediate change in your demeanor. You will talk and walk differently and have more productive interactions with others. The big difference is that you will feel yourself more worthy of respect and you will act accordingly.

By utilizing the special brainwave entrainment recordings, your confidence can be restored in a very short period of time. The methods are easy to learn and convenient to use. These recordings can be downloaded from the internet and they are inexpensive.

In the words of Rhonda Byron, ‘an individual is the most powerful magnet in the universe. He contains a magnetic power within himself that is more powerful than anything in this world and this unfathomable magnetic power is emitted through his thoughts’. Power of mind is the strongest weapon that differentiates human beings from other forms of living.

Human mind as per psychological definition is divided into the conscious and the unconscious segments. It has been frequently suggested that an iceberg can easily explain an individual’s mental life. The tip of the iceberg that person sees above the water represents the conscious mind of the individual whereas the remainder of the iceberg, in fact the major part of it that lies beneath the water portrays the unconscious phase of human mind. This means that we are not in complete control of ourselves all the time and we tend to get affected in ways beyond our expectations. There can be also situations when we do things for reason, we do not understand or will not admit to ourselves.

In this scenario comes the importance of mind training system where you can channelize the power of mind to create the life in the way you want. The new innovative concept of brainwave entrainment can do this trick to bring forth in your life more power, more success, more wealth and most importantly happiness that each individual crave for.

Mastering the subconscious mind is a relatively straightforward effective process based on the application of thoughts and power of the subconscious mind. Brainwave entrainment packages give the users multiple techniques to learn to master affirmations, visualizations and many other simple yet vital things that can harness the powers of mind. The concept of brainwave entrainment system goes beyond generating positive thinking and gives the users a system that they can apply in their day to day life to direct their subconscious mind to crate the positive and rewarding life the had been striving to achieve throughout their course of living.

The brainwave entrainment deals with various aspects of positive life style such as developing intuition, mastering the power of visualization, creation of wealth using the power of subconscious and in the broader sense applying the power of mind in all spheres of activity. It gives the skills to deal with any sort of crisis by diverting the subconscious to deal with it. The best part in this whole process is the fact that fatigue and tiredness are not known to the subconscious mind, so it can never tire or be over worked.

Once you have experienced the unleashing power of mind to create thoughts and beliefs that can mould the reality called life, you will begin to pay close attention to your each vibrations and response with greater care and patience. You tend to use the full power of mind in order to add power and strength to the images of things you want in life. Researchers claim that the more an individual master the technique of visualizing his goals, the faster they achieve them.

In the Vedic scriptures all creation is said to begin from divine light emanating from the Supreme Being. In the “Kurma Purana”, chapter 3, verses 1 & 2 are describing Bhuvanakosha or the matrix of this universe,

Evamesha Mahadevo Devadevah Pitamahah
Karoti Niyatam Kalam Kalatma Hyaisvari Tanuh
Tasya Ye Rasmayo Viprah Sarvaloka pradipakah
Tesam Sresthah Punah Saptarasmayo Graha yonayah

“In this way the Great Lord, the Lord of the Lords, the universal Grandfather, always creates time, He being the Essence of time, with a body endowed with all conceivable powers”.

“The rays that compose His body are omnipresent and illume the limitless worlds in the universe. Among them seven are the best and the highest as they form the matrices of the seven planets.”

This reference to the seven colors of the rainbow, or the components of visible light, herein state that the substratum of the universe consists of these seven principal rays and are said to be chief amongst the rays forming the body of the universe and the Supreme Godhead. In stating that these rays are identical with the universe and also with the powers of God, or the qualities of omniscience, omnipotence and omnipresence, it also infers that they are responsible for creation, maintenance and destruction of the universe, according to the Supreme will and the effect of time.

The connection between the five Mahabhutas and the planets is shown in Vedic astrological works, notably “Brihat Jataka” by Varaha Mihira (considered one of the great authorities on this subject) around 400 A.D. It speaks of the Sun as the condensed form of the red ray, Moon of orange, Mars of yellow, Mercury of green, Jupiter of blue, Venus of indigo and Saturn violet.

It is in the Ayurvedic texts that the process of color rays within creation is taken a step further with the mention of the “Pancha Mahabhutas”, or five great elements in the form of earth, water, fire, air and ether. It is concluded that earth is the condensed green color, water of orange and indigo, fire of red and yellow, air of violet and ether blue.

The “Pancha Tanmatras”, or five subtle substances considered in the Samkhya philosophical system, also have their origin in these seven cosmic colors. The red cosmic color is responsible for sight, green for smell, violet for touch, blue for sound, and orange for taste respectively. The yellow ray, which is warming and the indigo ray, which is cooling, regulate the body’s temperature.

Examination of the sense organs through a prism will actually show these colors to the eye if examined carefully. There will be a green glow around the tip of the nose and red will be visible in the eyes. The skin will give off an aura of violet and the tongue orange. Within the cavities of the head, the mouth and ears, blue will be detected.

The five primeval “vayus”, so important to our vital well-being make up the pranic sheath. These are known as prana, apana, samana, udana and vyana, which also have their origin in the seven colors of the rainbow. Prana vayu has a close association with the earth element and therefore the green ray. Apana vayu is connected with the water principle and therefore the cosmic colors of orange and indigo. Samana vayu is of fire and therefore composed of red and yellow. Udana vayu is of air, thus the violet color, while vyana vayu and ether find their origin in the cosmic blue ray.

Accordingly, it is a forgone conclusion that the combination of the elements or “tridosha” of ayurveda also have their origin in these seven cosmic rays of light. Vayu, air, combines air and ether, thus originating from blue and violet. Pitta, fire, is from fire and thus the colors red and yellow are its composition. Kapha dosha is a combination of earth and water, thus coming from orange, indigo and green.

Such observations obviously lend credence to these Vedic conclusions that it is due to the presence of these cosmic colors that the subtle and gross material creations can become animated and function on a physical, emotional, mental and conscious level. Our cellular structure is composed of the seven cosmic rays. To remain in a healthy condition the rays within the cells should be in state of equilibrium.

The great seers and healers of ancient Bharata-varsha made the observation that specific precious gems held within them the strongest concentration of the light rays found on the planet. There are many references in Vedic scriptures regarding the innate potency of gems when worn on the body. The texts of Garuda Purana, the Narada Purana and Agni Purana all give references to the use of gems. Although they do not give much information as to the methods of prescribing them for health or astrological reasons, they do give parameters for necessary quality of gem crystals, as well as benefits for human beings. Gemology was also an important Vedic science in ancient times given that in Vaishnava texts it is described that Krishna and Balarama also studied it in the gurukula of Sandipani Muni.

These gems are nine in total and linked to the seven planets in the jyotish (astrological) system. The two extra gems, not yet mentioned, are connected to the infra-red and ultra violet spectrum of the rainbow.

Ruby emits the same ray as the Sun – Red

Red coral the same as Mars – Yellow

Yellow sapphire as Jupiter – Blue

These are all considered to emit rays that are hot in nature.

Pearl emits the same ray as the Moon – Orange

Emerald as Mercury – Green

Diamond as Venus – Indigo

Blue Sapphire as Saturn – Violet

These are all considered to emit rays that are cooling in nature.

Hessonite garnet (also called gomed) is used for increasing the ultra-violet ray. This is for Rahu or the north node of the moon and is the coldest cosmic ray. Chrysoberyl cats-eye is a concentrated source of the infra-red cosmic ray and is for Ketu or the south node of the moon. It is the hottest of the rays. Natural gems radiate single cosmic rays only. Most other organic materials radiate a mixture of rays, with one or two being predominant.

For thousands of years, Ayurvedic doctors and Jyotishis have prescribed the use of natural precious gems in medicines or as amulets and rings. It is as a practicing Jyotishi and graduate gemologist for almost the past 40 years that I became interested in the link between these gems and the cosmic rays. We were introduced to the ground-breaking work of the late Dr. Benyotosh Battacharya of Calcutta who experimented with color wheels, gems and color depletion on cellular levels many years ago.

Dr. Battacharya noted that when two cosmic rays are disturbed, through proper health management, the body is capable of healing itself. Yet when three or more rays are disturbed and are left to remain so, the body will succumb to disease.

Recent studies have confirmed that sunlight is the key to the ‘circadian system’, our melatonin levels and cancer cells. The Sun’s light also affects those who are physically blind so our perception through the eyes has nothing to do with such absorption by the human body.

In the West the work of scientist Edwin Babbitt in 1878 on the principles of light and color was gleaned from Vedic texts. Unfortunately, followers of his beliefs were not taken seriously. Following him was Dinshaw Ghadiali who developed his own system called SPECTRO-CHROME Therapy. His son’s book documents his successes and relates his persecution for his ground-breaking work.

Russian scientists have researched the healing qualities of light, and determined that 660 nanometers was the most effective at sedating pain and stimulating healing. This technology has brought us LED’s (Light Emitting Diodes). Multiple diodes are also being used today in lamps specially created to treat pain.

Modern scientific experiments with crystals’ superconductivity have been observed, as electrons pair up below a certain temperature. Various compounds possess these superconducting properties, from pure metallic compounds to man made crystals of various alloys. The use of gem crystals has now long been known to modern science as quartz crystal is used in clocks, watches and computers, to using ruby in lasers in medicine and for other scientific applications.

Unfortunately well-funded experimentation with crystals in laboratory environments takes place mainly in the purview of military defense contractors and production of military weapons, rather than for healing. With the exception of a few notable doctors such as Dr. Shah of Bombay, a heart specialist, who is finding great success treating specific diseases using gems clinically, only a few doctors and health practitioners in Germany and the UK are developing and using light instruments for healing. Those that are using such methods are gaining impressive results in extended clinical trials, which in some cases have become a mainstay of many health care service practitioners in those countries.

In our research at the Vedic Cultural Fellowship’s clinic, we have integrated similar light instruments and the use of gems together. These specially developed electronic instruments impose specific frequencies, such as alpha, beta, delta, etc. through thick lenses within the lamps, upon the gems, intensifying the projected cosmic ray. This concentrated light is then beamed on a particular part or area of the body.

To promote healing within the body cells, organs and glands that are overstressed must have their present vibratory frequency reduced. Alternatively, when the vibratory level is too sluggish, the frequency needs to be increased. The brain’s activity, which can be read with biofeedback equipment, will show the state of health via the brainwaves vibrations. In severe anxiety-ridden states of mind, such as panic attacks, the brain’s frequency will be a high beta state, above 25 Mhz or cycles per second. Muscles will be contracted and the adrenals will be on ‘overload’. Often the eyes are seen as excessively dilated, and the body can go into shock. To counteract this, the brain’s vibrational frequency must be reduced toward an alpha state (8.5Mhz).

There are five basic brain frequencies:

High Beta (25MHz) – causes extreme anxiety

Beta (14-30MHz) – required to concentrate and cope with the daily affairs of life.

Alpha (7.8-14MHz) – the brains waves during meditation

Theta (3.2-7.8MHz) – hypnotic, trance like or dreaming

Delta (0.1-3.2MHz) – deep dreamless sleep

Gems have specific vibratory qualities that may be used to change and influence the brainwaves, but they can also be used to effect the cellular vibrations in the body, necessary for healthy functioning of all major organs and glands. The average frequency of the body during the day is between 62 and 68 cycles each second. If it drops below this rate, the immune system will start to shut down. Dr. Young and Bruce Tainio of Cheny University, noted that during their research cold symptoms appeared at 58 cycles, glandular fever at 52 and cancer at 42 cycles each second.

Natural, untreated gemstones, which are repositories of cosmic colors, can restore the pranic energy in the cellular structure, regaining the bodies ability to fight infection and disease. Blue sapphire can sedate or tranquilize; emerald can be used as an analgesic; Yellow sapphire has antiseptic qualities; and diamond may be used as a stimulant.

This therapy can be used to stimulate acupuncture points, to heal wounds or skin conditions with less scarring, to calm the mind, and to balance the doshas or bodily humors as well as to target biological energy and cohesion on a deep cellular level.

In our own work we have kept careful records of the effects on the mental and physical health of our patients while using the electronic gem lamps. The results have been astounding. The ayurvedic principles of treating kapha disease with pita or vata gems, pita disease with kapha gems, etc. has been shown to be extremely effective in most instances with patients in our clinic.

For example we have treated joint pain in patients’ knees with blue sapphire alone or sometimes with blue sapphire and emerald together. It reduced inflammation and the pain in the knees within 20 to 30 minutes. Patients with high anxiety were also made to calm down significantly within about 10 minutes by using the blue sapphire gemstone, along with a “delta” frequency of 1-2 pulses per second imposed upon it, beamed directly upon the area between the eyes. Asthma was successfully treated with diamond.

Groundbreaking results were achieved in treating a woman with “endometriosis” (a kapha disease). She was becoming severely anemic as the disease took hold. Using ruby and cats-eye together with a beta frequency of 16 pulses per second twice a week for three months, her symptoms stopped. The symptoms did return, though, after going without treatments for six months. Treatments were then resumed twice, then once, per week until the symptoms subsided, then only once a year for two years. Ten years have past and she has had no recurrence of the endometriosis, being healthy ever since. We consider this a monumental result, as modern medicine can only offer removal of the womb or a “hysterectomy” to solve this malady and still consistent results are not always achieved.

Similarly we have been able to prove the Ayurvedic contention, that certain organs and nerve centers of the body are nourished through the chakra and nadi system by particular colors through utilizing this method of beaming light through gems with an imposed frequency.

This is groundbreaking work, and much more is yet to be done, but it is not only our belief, but also that of many who work in this area of expertise, that using light waves and color spectrum vibrations for healing is the medicine of the future. It is non-invasive, has little or no side effects and if offered with dietary and lifestyle changes can often heal the patient completely and permanently. Utilizing the wearing of gems in conjunction with this clinical method can also optimize the results gained.

The ancient authors of the science of Ayurveda told of the healing potential of gemstone crystals. Perhaps they knew that thousands of years later we would come to enhance this healing modality by combining it with our modern scientific discoveries and techniques. If they did, I hope they saw in us the courage to pursue our research and make it a safe, natural form of treatment for generations to come.
