Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

We’ve all heard, numerous times, the more you repeat something, the more likely you are to start to believe it. Since we live in a belief-driven Universe, this is a very important statement, and one that has been given much attention in Self-help, religious, and therapeutic texts for a good long while. Affirmations are used to help us with everything from improving our self-esteem, to increasing our income and decreasing our waistlines. Athletes, Seekers, and Network Marketers alike have all numerated the glorious benefits of “Positive Affirmations” and we have all heard the stories of folks down on their luck, or who become ill, depressed, sociopathic or worse, as a result of Negative Affirmations.
So, if Affirmations are so effective, why don’t more people use them? Why is it that if you print out your positive affirmations on an index card and lay them out on your desk, to remind you of them during the day, people will begin to think you’re off your rocker, or some kind of kook? How come Affirmations aren’t something that everyone practices, especially since it’s such a sure-fire way to get to where you want to go? Because they take forever to work, that’s why.
Any good teaching will tell you that repetition is key, and the more repetitions the better! Brainwave Entrainment software and recordings have sold untold thousands of copies of “positive affirmations” in an attempt to help folks who just can’t sit around all day chanting “I am now happy” like a mantra til they finally get happy. It could take a while, and who has time to wait nowadays?
Not me, and I’m a big believer in affirmations. However, I’ve found a short-cut. I like simple, easy, and fast. That’s why I love the Emotional Freedom Techniques. EFT for short. EFT was designed to help those in therapy to shorten the span of time between first visit and noticeable results, but it turned out to be nothing short of a miraculous remedy for everything from depression, diabetes, bee stings and ADHD to everything in between, and then some.
EFT is an Energy Meridian Therapy, and you simply tap on certain Acupuncture points in the body, while you direct your mind with phrases. The magic is in the words you use, and the emotions you have attached to those words. So to supercharge my affirmations, what I do is first ask myself “Why do I currently not such and such?” for example, “Why am I currently not earning 7 grand per month?” One of the answers to that question is “7 grand is a lot of money for ANYBODY to earn, and I’m nothing special that I should earn that much” That’s a tappable issue!
The key to getting underneath all the emotional gunk, and really cleaning out any resistance to earning 7 grand is to exaggerate my issue. So my Setup phrase would go “Even though 7 grand is a WHOLE LOT of money, and I’m nothing special, what makes me think I could earn that much? I don’t deserve it, I deeply and completely love and accept myself” the fun part is dramatizing it. I draw out the words, fake some self-loathing and pitiful whining, really get goofy. Of course, I’m hiding in the bathroom, or hunkered down in the car when I do this, in case the NutCase Police are watching.
It’s also a good practice to know exactly WHY you desire the thing you’re shooting for. In my case, it’s independence, and Travel. Then I ask myself “Why do I currently not have the independence I desire, Why am I currently not traveling when I want?” Ka-Blam! More tappable issues. Some are personal, some financial, some are self-worth related, and some are just really silly. I tap on all of them. Rational or not.
After I’ve tapped out any resistance to my goal, it’s time to tap IN some Positive Affirmations. I really like Gary Craig’s suggestion of singing them, while you’re tapping. So, to the tune of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” I sing “I make 7 grand a month, very easily” Sometimes, I like to make up a tune as I go, and it usually comes out sounding suspiciously like one nursery rhyme or other. I use all the tapping points, but my favorite is the Collarbone and Thymus. You might have a different favorite, so use that one.
Here’s the thing. Using Affirmations alone, it would probably take years to reach that income goal. But with the horsepower of EFT behind my affirmations, I’m on track to reach my income goals sometime later THIS year! (Yeah, 2008. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it) If it only cut the time in half, think how much faster you would achieve YOUR goals!
EFT is a gift, and becoming proficient at it only takes practice. So follow Gary Craig’s advice. Try it on everything.
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.
This ‘frequency following’ response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ‘entrain’ to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.
On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.
Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.
THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ‘mind-tripping’, enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.
While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.
We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person’s starting position, entrainment can be rather ‘hit and miss’.
If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you’re probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain’s strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.
