Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

The Unexplainable Store has become one of the leading sellers of brainwave entrainment audio recordings online. Their meditation MP3s and CDs have received many glowing reviews from users, but recent expansions of the product line-up have included some pretty unconventional offerings. I am beginning to wonder if The Unexplainable Store has lost the plot.
A Stellar Range of Meditation MP3s
The core of The Unexplainable Store’s catalog is a huge range of brainwave entrainment recordings, available in both MP3 download and traditional CD format, which target a wide array of brain frequencies and corresponding human potentials. Quality is exceptional, with all products recorded at a 320 bitrate to minimize compression-related data loss. (This is critical with entrainment audio, where the frequency-inducing binaural beats or isochronic tones are subsonic; i.e., below the range of human hearing.) Some examples include recordings to:
Generate ultra-low frequency Delta waves associated with deep sleep, both to act as a sleep aid and, most interestingly, stimulate the cellular regeneration and growth that naturally occur during the Delta phases of the sleep cycle.
Improve concentration and alertness by enhancing Beta waves in those who suffer from Attention-Deficit Disorder, which typically sees an excess of Alpha and Theta waves and not enough Beta to function properly in the day-to-day world.
Enhance creativity and intuition through various frequencies in the Alpha and Theta ranges associated with the subconscious, learning, and memory. This is particularly interesting territory for people wishing to “program” themselves to behave differently or to create new realities through the power of manifestation and visualization.
Beyond the Basics… Way Beyond
The Unexplainable Store has always offered recordings that would appeal to those interested in mysticism or the occult, such as recordings to develop extra-sensory perception, enable remote viewing, and help with the quest for lucid dreaming. But a recent doubling of the product range added some topics not normally expected from an audio producer, leading one to wonder if perhaps they are pushing the envelope too far. Some cases in point:
A recording that is supposed to clear the complexion of acne sufferers. The sales pitch spends most of its time playing on all the expected emotions and anxieties, and too little time explaining how a brainwave recording is going to help. Supposedly, Theta waves will improve blood flow to the skin to promote healing while the Alpha wave will seek out and remove impurities from the body. Sorry, not convinced.
Female sex drive is said to be improved by a frequency on the Delta-Theta border. No empirical evidence is given to support the claim. And why does it only work for women? What about all the middle-aged men worried about dysfunction and low testosterone? Surely there’s a marketing opportunity going begging there?
Similarly, a different Delta recording is touted as a way to increase a woman’s chances of conceiving. Now, it is quite likely that a deep Delta meditation will have beneficial health effects, but I think The Unexplainable Store is skating on thin ice when they lead possibly desperate people to expect so much from an MP3. The claim being made here is just too strong.
I could go on, but you get the picture. It seems to me that The Unexplainable Store risks descending into quackery as the lure of certain marketing opportunities proves too great to resist. And I worry that the store’s reputation will ultimately be tarnished, causing people who really could benefit from brainwave entrainment to shun some genuinely useful products.
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.
This ‘frequency following’ response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ‘entrain’ to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.
On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.
Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.
THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ‘mind-tripping’, enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.
While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.
We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person’s starting position, entrainment can be rather ‘hit and miss’.
If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you’re probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain’s strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.
