Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

The way the world is changing… so fast, so furious, so unpredictable… you need an edge! The current crop of brainwave technology can give you that edge. And make you an unstoppable force in your career.
Brainwaves are measures of the electrical activity in the brain. Using an EEG machine, this electrical activity is registered as frequency waves or brainwaves. There are specific ‘bands’ of brainwave activity associated with different mental processes. These frequency bands, stretching from a high measurement of 100 Hz to a low of approximately 0.1 Hz, are given the names Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta.
All that scientific detail is unimportant to you the user. The research is there to back up the claims should you wish to explore it. However, your main interest, as is mine, is how brainwave technology, including brain entrainment programs, light and sound machines, neuro biofeedback, binaural beats CDs and a whole range of bio-electrical devices, can enhance your life and abilities.
To thrive in the modern era, you need to function at your absolute best. You need to be mentally sharp and on the ball. You need to be able to adapt and learn quickly. Being able to absorb and retain new information is a must. More than that, you need to be creative and innovative. You’ve got to become a brain wave merchant, an idea generator, a creative genius who can think fast and put ideas into action in order to profit.
Traditionally you might have learned to meditate in order to have control over your brainwaves. Typically this would involve a long apprenticeship with an enlightened guru, master or teacher. By long, I mean years. It’s a great path to tread if you have the time and inclination. Most people with a mortgage, debts and families don’t have the luxury. Plus, the big challenge today is about living in the world not escaping from it.
As for getting to become a creative genius, that has been a lonely furrow to tread. Very few people are given the opportunity or set of environmental conditions that allow them to make full use of their innate genius. Getting inspired brain waves has been a very hit and miss affair for most of us. Occasionally, without knowing how, we come up with a ‘bolt from the blue’ idea. But it’s hardly been something you could rely on.
I personally like mind mapping as an idea generating tool. It suits me. I doodle a lot while I am thinking anyway. Image streaming is a great process too. Not only for stimulating ideas but for stimulating your IQ too. But these are time takers. They still involve effort and practice.
The beauty of the new brainwave technology is that you can use it to harvest a flood of innovative and creative brain wave ideas. Having mapped the combinations of brainwaves present in the minds of long-term meditation experts, great artists, brilliant business leaders, sports champions, geniuses and the like, the brainwave technology geeks have discovered how to replicate those same patterns in anyone.
Simply by listening to a pyscho-acoustic CD, for example, you could enter an expanded state of consciousness equivalent to a yogi who has meditated all his life! Or you could recreate the Olympic champion mindset of a Michael Phelps or the the dynamic entrepreneurial brilliance of someone like Richard Branson. What about unleashing that flood of creative brain waves?
It would be so much easier to just uncork your brain and pour all the hidden brilliance out. And that is exactly what the brainwave technology does. By matching the brainwave patterns, the technology acts as a key to unlock your human potential.
Human beings have always learned by emulation. We copy our parents, families and social groups to learn how to behave, fit in and contribute to our society. With this new brainwave technology we have the ability to copy and replicate the best in our world. I don’t know about you, but I find this tremendously exciting and think we have a duty to make the most of it.
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.
This ‘frequency following’ response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ‘entrain’ to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.
On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.
Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.
THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ‘mind-tripping’, enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.
While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.
We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person’s starting position, entrainment can be rather ‘hit and miss’.
If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you’re probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain’s strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.
