Brainwave Entrainment Finding The Best Isochronic Tone Downloads

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

What Are Isochronic Tones?

Firstly, for those who are not already familiar with how isochronic tones work, let us take a brief look at what they do. Isochronic tones are a type of sound-based brainwave entrainment technology. Brainwave entrainment refers to the brains tendency to synchronize to an external rhythmic stimulus. If the stimulus has a frequency similar to the brains own range, the brain will tend to match it.

This is useful because the brain produces brainwaves of different frequencies, depending on your state of consciousness. For example, if you are in a state of light relaxation, the brain will predominantly produce alpha brainwaves (in the 8 – 12 Hz range), whereas the theta (4 – 8Hz) range is linked with deeper trance states and dreaming sleep. By listening to an isochronic recording that incorporates these frequencies, many people find it much easier to access specific states of consciousness at will, without having to spend years learning to meditate.

Isochronic tones are pulses of sound that are regularly spaced, and turn on and off in a precise pattern. The frequency at which the pulses repeat varies, according to the purpose for which they are being used. Unlike binaural beats, each pulse is entirely separate from the next — this makes it easier for the brain to follow the rhythm, making isochronic tones a very efficient method of brainwave entrainment.

Choosing Isochronic Tones – What To Look For

Although isochronic tones are not as widely available as binaural beats yet, there are still many places online where you can find them. If you are having trouble deciding which ones to use, here are some things to bear in mind while making your choice:

The tones must be audible

Unlike binaural beats, isochronic tones must be audible in order to be effective. This means that they cannot be fully masked by background music, pink noise or other sounds that are often used on brainwave entrainment recordings. It is ok if the track has these additional sounds (and most will, since they make the listening experience more pleasant),just be sure that you can still hear the tones as well.

The tones should be ramped

This means that the frequency of the tones should change gradually, in order to make the entrainment more effective. The best results, the recording should begin with frequencies close to where you are starting from (which will usually be the beta or high alpha state), and gradually move towards the target frequency. If you are trying to get into the theta state, for example, you do not want a recording that starts off with theta frequency tones, as the entrainment process will likely be less effective. Instead it should start off in beta or high alpha range, and then gradually progress downwards.

Be careful in the delta range

While isochronic tones can be used across the entire brainwave frequency range, many people find that they do not work so well in the delta frequency band, and that at this slow rate the sound of the tones becomes rather irritating and distracting. In such cases, binaural beats are often preferred instead. This is not necessarily going to be everyone’s experience, but it’s something to bear in mind if you are aiming to access the delta range.

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

This ‘frequency following’ response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ‘entrain’ to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.

On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.

Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.

THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ‘mind-tripping’, enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.

While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.

We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person’s starting position, entrainment can be rather ‘hit and miss’.

If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you’re probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain’s strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.

What are Holosync and Holothink?

Music has been a powerful mean of calming one’s mind and regulating the gushing thoughts. However, this may not be the case always as mere rap and pop will not be effective when one is under heavy stress or pressure. This leads to the requirement of the well-proven stress relievers. Holothink has released “Totally Tranquil” downloable audio programs that are designed to channelize people’s brainwaves such that they calm down and make the individual feel relaxed.

Many users have revealed by voting that “Totally Tranquil” made them fight back their stress efficiently. The approaches of relieving stress with the help of particular audio programs that are designed carefully to influence the sub-conscious mind are based on the extensive researches. Holosync has launched meditation CDs that are in high demand in spite of their expensive cost. Similar to the all other self-help products in market, Holosync technology also aims at enhancing the person’s imagination and creativity. However, they are unique in the way they control one’s thoughts and feelings. Many of the users have described that all the external sounds and distractions began to fade as they began listening to the Holosync MP3s.

Tips on Using Holosync Mp3

It does not require special training or courses prior to using the Holosync MP3s. All one has to do is insert the purchased Holosync meditation CDs into any of their audio systems, preferably with headphones and relax. One of the tips for achieving best results from Holosync MP3 is to concentrate on one’s thoughts, feelings, and the mind images while they are listening to the powerful tones and sounds from the Holosync CDs. From the users’ reviews, they claim to have enjoyed a sense of enhanced creativity and at times found it difficult for the mind to quit the excitement even after the session. One can make use of the Holosync MP3s to the maximum only if they are committed during the audio sessions. The ideal number of sessions required for practicing Holosync meditation CDs is 6 days per week with at least 1 hour/day.

Tips on Using Holothink

“Totally Tranquil” by Holothink does not require much additional efforts as they do not require any intensive practices. The 60-minute-long audio program can be heard whenever an individual feels depressed or stressed out. Holosync MP3 and Holothink continue to top the list of self-help products in spite of the tough competition from the alternatives.

WHAT ARE BRAINWAVES?

Every moment of your life your brain is active. It is pulsing
with electrical impulses; you heard that right, electricity! The
electricity or electrical current generated by the brain can be
measured with an electroencephalogram (EEG), which measures the
frequency of the electrical current. This frequency or speed of
the brainwave is measured in Hertz(HZ).

Now here is the really cool part. These frequencies can be
associated with your state of mind at any particular moment.
This means that your state of mind, for example being relaxed,
frightened, or sleepy…can be “seen” in your brainwave
frequencies. The speed of the frequency allows us to categorize
our brainwaves into four broad categories.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT BRAINWAVE PATTERNS?

There are four common brainwave patterns that have been well
researched and documented. They are:

BETA WAVES – 14Hz to 20Hz. Beta waves are associated with normal
waking consciousness. They are present when you are focused on
activities in the outside world.

ALPHA WAVES – 8Hz to 13Hz. Alpha waves are likened to a light
meditation. They are prevalent when you daydream. They will
become stronger when your eyes are closed.

THETA WAVES – 4Hz to 7Hz. Theta waves occur during heightened
states of creativity and are found with a deep meditative state.

DELTA WAVES – .5Hz to 3Hz. Delta waves are found in a deep sleep
state or unconsciousness. Also, Delta waves are common in very
deep meditation.

FOCUS, CREATIVITY AND CONCENTRATION – THE ALPHA CONNECTION

A predominance of Alpha waves in the brain is associated with
accelerated learning, focus and enhanced creativity. When you
are focus on something, there is a predominance of Alpha waves.
No matter what your profession or hobby, these attributes will
increase your productivity and enhance your experience.

FINDING THE HIGHER SELF – THE THETA CONNECTION

A deep meditative state is true bliss. Increase your Theta waves
and you are on your way to this state. In the Theta state you
can lose your attachment to the physical body. You will feel a
deep sense of physical relaxation. This disconnect of mind and
body allows you to focus on the inner you, the higher self. This
is the ideal state to begin your journey into meditation.

SLEEP AND MORE – THE DELTA CONNECTION

A Delta state has long been associated with sleep. If you have
trouble sleeping, the CDs targeting this range will help
immensely. Having a CD that targets the Delta brainwaves will
allow you to enter a deep sleep state easily. It will be time to
say goodbye to insomnia!

Recently there has also been some research that suggests that an
even deeper meditative state can occur during predominate Delta
wave activity. As you gain experience and comfort with
meditation, you may want to try reaching a Delta state during
meditation.

What are Brainwave Entrainment systems?

Brainwave Entrainment refers to the brains electrical response to rhythmic sensory stimulation, such as pulses of sound or light.Binaural beats are used in brainwave entrainment and were discovered in 1839 by a German experimenter, H. W. Dove, but Binaural Beats are mostly accredited to Dr. Gerald Oster who published research he conducted in 1973 in Scientific American.

The human ability to “hear” binaural beats appears to be the result of evolutionary adaptation Binaural beats are auditory brainstem responses which originate in the superior olivary nucleus of each hemisphere The binaural-beat appears to be associated with an electroencephalographic frequency following response in the brain

When the brain is given a stimulus, through the ears, eyes or other senses, Your brain is the seat of your intelligence and source of your emotions … and so it controls your entire life. If you can control these in a positive way, then you life becomes positive and start to see improvements in all aspects..

Everyone knows that any improvement you can make in the raw power, speed and efficiency of your mind, will empower you to capture wealth, health, happiness and everything you desire … faster than you ever thought possible. Brain entrainment can unleash this within you by using brainwave entrainment systems.!And it involves no learning nor prior experience at all.Brainwave entrainment systems uses binaural beats to synchronize the brain, much like a Tuning fork when vibrating can make another tuning fork vibrate at the same Frequency just by being close to each other. Binaural beats are currently being used for all sorts of human conditions such as relaxation, stress, temporary pain relief, temporary stress reduction, sleeping disorders, general relaxation, and meditation. Binaural beats brain entrainment systems are thought to effect major changes in your emotional and mental states

Probably you’ve tried other self improvement, self help programs and products and you’re still at the same place you’ve always been disappointed and frustrated,(I know I have)But this is the answer you have been looking for. Brainwave entrainment systems allows you to bring your mind into the right neuro programming to allow you to achieve the successes you are looking for.

Studies have shown that brain entrainment can take you to lower brain wave states (alpha, delta, and theta). These are the brain wave states where you can access deep relaxation, and tap into your deep subconscious intuition and inner genius. I have found that using the binaural beats, brain entrainment systems did evoke emotional, mental positive responses that they said they would and I thoroughly enjoyed them.I have never found any self help course or programs that was as simple and easy to use as brainwave entrainment systems. For me this has been the best help in my quest for self improvement.

What are binaural beats?

You may have heard all the hype about binaural beats and how people are improving their lives with them, now you want to know what they are all about. How does it work?

Binaural beats are a recording of rhythms where each rhythm is on a different level, when the two levels are combined the difference causes the binaural beat. These beats when listened to, cause the rhythm to train your brain waves to work on a consistent level. Each set of binaural beats works in a different way causing different effects on the brain waves.

People are using binaural beats to improve several factors in their lives. Day traders are using it to be more successful, they are getting a positivity factor from it as well as being more alert to make important decisions based on their trading.

The average Joe can use it as well. It can be used to make anyone more alert. Being more alert and having more energy during the day should give you a better quality of life. In addition to using binaural beats for alertness and energy you can use it to increase your quality of sleep.

Another great factor about binaural beats is there is so little work to do in order to benefit from them. There are no books to read, no workbooks to go through and no counseling involved. No one even has to know you are improving yourself, unless you want to tell them where the improvement came from, because they will notice. With binaural beats, the work is as simple as popping in a cd before you go to bed, and falling asleep, the easiest job you could do.

What are astral projection frequencies? If you want to achieve astral projection, you would need to pass through a number of different frequencies. There are six different types of frequencies, which a person feels, before they are able to achieve astral travel or OBE successfully.

It needs practice to combine all the different frequencies together but with practice and adequate knowledge, you would be able to achieve the desired results. It is not as difficult as it seems and with the right technique, you would be able to achieve astral projection.

Here is a list of six frequencies and the various state of mind, which an individual would have during these frequencies.

1. Gamma – The frequency in this is 38 Hz to 90 Hz.

2. Beta – It has a frequency of 12 Hz to 37 Hz.

3. Alpha – It has a frequency of 8 Hz to 11 Hz.

4. Theta – It has a frequency of 4 Hz to 7 Hz.

5. Delta – It has a frequency of 0.5 Hz to 3 Hz.

6. Lambda or Epsilon – It has a frequency of 0.5 Hz to over 100 Hz.

In each of these frequencies an individual has a different state of mind, which could vary from been very relaxed to been very near to sleep or a state of high awareness. Depending on the frequency, this state of mind could keep changing.

You would require practice to attain each one of these frequencies and after some time, you would be able to achieve the frequency you want by controlling the brainwaves, which help create them. The effects of the frequency could also vary from one individual to the other.

There are various techniques, which can be used by people to achieve these different frequencies. The best place to gain more information about the techniques and process of astral projection frequencies would be the Internet.

Brainwave Entrainment The Law of Attraction and the Placebo Effect

We’ve chatted a lot about the Law of Attraction, most recently ‘deja vu,’ or ‘already seen,’ about which science seems to phlegmatically turn its back.

They contend that supporters of the Law confuse the activity of brainwaves from an electrical standpoint. Who said anything about brainwaves? We’re not talking about brain anything here. We’re discussing the mind, which is a totally different animal.

As well as deja vu, scientists are baffled about the Placebo effect.

If one of your relatives is displaying serious signs of anxiety; they’re pacing the room, they can’t settle, they’re nervous even frightened, and you tell them that you know a doctor who can help them. Say it’s a Sunday morning and the likelihood of a doctor paying them a visit is slim to none. If you did find someone, you’d be forced to take out a mortgage on the house to pay him.

But you tell your relative that this man’s a personal friend, a most pleasant and accommodating man, and would be only too willing to help. Besides which, he’s very experienced in most forms of mental illness, but particularly anxiety and panic attacks.

Your relative’s interest is immediately heightened, and he agrees to let you telephone the man and arrange for a visit.

Your friend knows as much about medical matters as you do nuclear physics, which is absolutely nothing. However, you tell him the circumstances, ask him to help you out by bringing along a few aspirin, and in his most comforting tones, tell your relative that while he should see his own doctor, the pills he’s about to be given are strong anti-depressants which will nevertheless calm him down, help him sleep and generally produce a sense of contentment.

He’s brought enough for five days, and the ‘patient’ should take no more than two a day; one in the morning, the other early evening. Your friend is a good actor and plays the part of the caring doctor to perfection.

Your relative will take these pills as directed and will almost certainly feel a whole lot better.

Now no-one knows exactly why this is. A dose of Aspirin certainly isn’t going to do very much by itself, but when your relative has it implanted in his mind that they’re far more powerful, the mind effectively goes along with the charade.

Some scientists suggest that the Law of Attraction is somehow tied to the Placebo effect. Briefly and basically, we tell the mind we’re rich, the mind believes us and takes it from there. And what, I ask you, is wrong with that? Results are what we’re looking for. Methods, provided they be harmless, are of no concern.

There’s a lot more to it than that, I know, but I’m merely citing an example of what could be part of the equation.

There’s a most interesting anecdote, in fairness little more than a rumor, but one with a ring of truth, that Napoleon Hill, famous for his book, ‘Think And Grow Rich,’ found himself in very hot water with Henry Ford when he held a series of lectures in 1928 which he named ‘The Law Of Success.’ There were sixteen lessons involved.

Ford was absolutely furious because he considered that Hill had divulged the secrets of the ‘Elite Class,’ as Ford called what was presumably a coterie of business people. Others have been ridiculed for suggesting that the Law of Attraction and its machinations were purposely hidden by certain powerful individuals.

This rather makes you wonder, doesn’t it?

Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

We’ve all heard, numerous times, the more you repeat something, the more likely you are to start to believe it. Since we live in a belief-driven Universe, this is a very important statement, and one that has been given much attention in Self-help, religious, and therapeutic texts for a good long while. Affirmations are used to help us with everything from improving our self-esteem, to increasing our income and decreasing our waistlines. Athletes, Seekers, and Network Marketers alike have all numerated the glorious benefits of “Positive Affirmations” and we have all heard the stories of folks down on their luck, or who become ill, depressed, sociopathic or worse, as a result of Negative Affirmations.

So, if Affirmations are so effective, why don’t more people use them? Why is it that if you print out your positive affirmations on an index card and lay them out on your desk, to remind you of them during the day, people will begin to think you’re off your rocker, or some kind of kook? How come Affirmations aren’t something that everyone practices, especially since it’s such a sure-fire way to get to where you want to go? Because they take forever to work, that’s why.

Any good teaching will tell you that repetition is key, and the more repetitions the better! Brainwave Entrainment software and recordings have sold untold thousands of copies of “positive affirmations” in an attempt to help folks who just can’t sit around all day chanting “I am now happy” like a mantra til they finally get happy. It could take a while, and who has time to wait nowadays?

Not me, and I’m a big believer in affirmations. However, I’ve found a short-cut. I like simple, easy, and fast. That’s why I love the Emotional Freedom Techniques. EFT for short. EFT was designed to help those in therapy to shorten the span of time between first visit and noticeable results, but it turned out to be nothing short of a miraculous remedy for everything from depression, diabetes, bee stings and ADHD to everything in between, and then some.

EFT is an Energy Meridian Therapy, and you simply tap on certain Acupuncture points in the body, while you direct your mind with phrases. The magic is in the words you use, and the emotions you have attached to those words. So to supercharge my affirmations, what I do is first ask myself “Why do I currently not such and such?” for example, “Why am I currently not earning 7 grand per month?” One of the answers to that question is “7 grand is a lot of money for ANYBODY to earn, and I’m nothing special that I should earn that much” That’s a tappable issue!

The key to getting underneath all the emotional gunk, and really cleaning out any resistance to earning 7 grand is to exaggerate my issue. So my Setup phrase would go “Even though 7 grand is a WHOLE LOT of money, and I’m nothing special, what makes me think I could earn that much? I don’t deserve it, I deeply and completely love and accept myself” the fun part is dramatizing it. I draw out the words, fake some self-loathing and pitiful whining, really get goofy. Of course, I’m hiding in the bathroom, or hunkered down in the car when I do this, in case the NutCase Police are watching.

It’s also a good practice to know exactly WHY you desire the thing you’re shooting for. In my case, it’s independence, and Travel. Then I ask myself “Why do I currently not have the independence I desire, Why am I currently not traveling when I want?” Ka-Blam! More tappable issues. Some are personal, some financial, some are self-worth related, and some are just really silly. I tap on all of them. Rational or not.

After I’ve tapped out any resistance to my goal, it’s time to tap IN some Positive Affirmations. I really like Gary Craig’s suggestion of singing them, while you’re tapping. So, to the tune of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” I sing “I make 7 grand a month, very easily” Sometimes, I like to make up a tune as I go, and it usually comes out sounding suspiciously like one nursery rhyme or other. I use all the tapping points, but my favorite is the Collarbone and Thymus. You might have a different favorite, so use that one.

Here’s the thing. Using Affirmations alone, it would probably take years to reach that income goal. But with the horsepower of EFT behind my affirmations, I’m on track to reach my income goals sometime later THIS year! (Yeah, 2008. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it) If it only cut the time in half, think how much faster you would achieve YOUR goals!

EFT is a gift, and becoming proficient at it only takes practice. So follow Gary Craig’s advice. Try it on everything.

Brainwave Entrainment Meditation Music Makes It Easy

We’ve all heard of mood music, but “music to meditate to”? It sounds a bit ridiculous, doesn’t it? Of course, the power of meditation to speed healing, enhance mood – all those good things have been scientifically proven and are widely accepted today.

But many people find it difficult to reach the fabled Alpha relaxation state in simple meditation. It can take months of practice to learn to sustain an Alpha state for any length of time. And as for the deeper Delta and Theta states! They can require a real adept and years of practice.

Robert A Monroe, creator and founder of the famed Monroe Institute and perhaps best-known for his books on out-of-body experiences, was actually a highly successful sound engineer by profession. He discovered that by playing music with different beats in each ear, the brain itself would become entrained and pulse at the difference between the two beats. Using this “binaural” beat technology, it was possible to select which frequency to entrain the brain to, and by listening to Alpha binaural beats the brain was placed in the Alpha (7 – 13 beats) meditation state.

With the deeper states it was found best to first entrain to Alpha for a while. After this it can be lowered to Theta (4 – 7) for a while before going to Delta (0.1 – 4 beats). The Beta (13 – 60) brainwave state is the normal waking state.

This discovery revolutionized meditation for many people. At the flick of a switch it became possible to get into the Alpha state. And the deeper meditation states could be reached 10 – 20 minutes later.

The Alpha state is a state of non-arousal. This is the best state for quiet contemplation, relaxation and learning. There is research which indicates that, while the cortex operates at Alpha or Beta (normal waking state for adults), the hippocampus operates at the Theta frequency. By extension, the brain stem may operate at the Delta frequency. So getting into theta puts you more in touch with your emotions. Delta would then be related to autonomic body functions. So the deeper brainwave states may help further in releasing tensions and healing.

Binaural Beats (which require the use of headphones) were discovered in the 60’s and 70’s – eons ago in terms of modern technology! Nowadays we also have Monaural Beats, Isochronic Tones and Trypnaural Isochronic Tones. None of these newer technologies require headphones. Many of them are now mixed with relaxing music and are now offered as music to meditate to and considered very effective.

If you are interested in meditating, but don’t want to waste months learning how (and who has the time, these days) then there are hundreds meditation mp3s available online free or for purchase and immediate download.

And proven Binaural Beat meditation CDs are available from The Monroe Institute (Hemi-Sync), as well as Centerpointe (Holo-Sync) and other similar websites. You can even get free software to generate these beats and tones and super-impose them on your choice of relaxation music.

The proven health and mental benefits of meditation are easily available to anyone with an mp3 player or a CD player. Other beneficial music such as Solfeggio tones can be combined with entrainment pulses to enhance their effect. With the easy availability of this music, why hesitate? Get yourself some highly effective, technologically advanced music to meditate to and improve your life in many ways within minutes.

We’ve all had the experience in one form or another. Let’s say we arrive at work in the morning and as soon as we walk in the door our boss or a coworker says, or does, something or other that upsets us. Or perhaps, before we set out we had a little tiff with our spouse over breakfast.

Or let’s take a setting very far removed from the office: we’ve just arrived at the resort hotel for the vacation we’ve been dreaming of all year. But on the way we were flagged down and ticketed for exceeding the speed limit. Or, we find that the room we reserved is not ready yet and we’re forced to wait, tired and hungry, in a crowded and drafty reception lounge for an hour and a half.

Now, let’s take out our imaginary “emotion meter” and take a reading of our mood or state of mind during the rest of the day at the office, or the first few days of our vacation.

Our boss’s momentary rudeness (or at least we perceived it as such) is in the past. He may even have apologized, or we may have realized that it was really our fault. Or the minor discomfort we had to endure on the first day of our vacation didn’t last much longer than sixty minutes. Great! So why are we making so many mistakes on the job, and why was our lazy day on the sun-drenched beach…well, yes, a lot of fun, but…not quite as much fun as it was last year?

To be sure, our emotional state at any particular moment affects our actions, present and immediate future, in so many different ways, and I mentioned some of them in my recent post on defining emotional intelligence. Yet unfortunately, that’s often not the end of the story.

It’s bad enough when some external stimulus, whatever it is, make us feel angry, or disappointed, or irritable, or extremely frustrated, and so gives rise to a mood or state of mind that can last for several hours, days, or even weeks.

What’s worse is that our emotional state often doesn’t just remain at its initial level. It may escalate in intensity, without warning, so quickly that the person feels he is losing control (or sometimes he may not even feel it!). I have seen this referred to very descriptively as “the spiral effect.” Perhaps an even more appropriate term would be the “one-thing-leads-to-another syndrome.”

Jack and Jill’s little spat – what was their mistake?

Let’s use an imaginary couple, Jack and Jill, to cite a simple and familiar example from everyday life.

After a business meeting had finished sooner than anticipated, Jack calls Jill mid afternoon to tell her that he will be arriving home earlier than usual. Of course, Jill is pleased, and asks him if she could save her a trip by stopping off at the neighborhood supermarket on the way to pick up a few things. She rattles off the items she wants, and assures Jack that though she might not be at home when he comes, she’ll be back soon.

Jack arrives home with the goods. Jill isn’t back yet. He was pleased to help because he figures Jill must be exhausted after an especially busy day. Then he has a brainwave: why not help even more by cooking some supper? So he takes some noodles and eggs and a few other small items from the bag he’s just brought and begins to cook up a dish he knows Jill is fond of.

The pot on the stove is almost ready when Jill walks in. She ambles over to the stove, opens the pot nervously, and lets out a scream. A real scream.

“Hey, Jack, have you gone out of your mind? Are those the noodles you bought? I especially needed them for the meal I promised to take to my sick friend tomorrow. I wanted to use the leftovers from Sunday lunch for supper tonight…now I’ll just have to throw them out. And by the way, you bonehead, you now I always buy brown eggs, not white ones. Can’t you think for once in your life?”

Jack, who just two minutes ago was expecting to be showered with praise for his thoughtfulness, is overtaken at first with with a numb feeling. A rather bland, seemingly harmless, sensation. But the numbness quickly turns to bewilderment, which in turn converts into anger.

And unfortunately, anger breeds more anger. Jack storms out of the kitchen, leaving a badly burned culinary creation to go up in smoke. And a lovely young couple hardly speaking to each other for several days.

What should Jack have done – while his emotions were still reasonably under control? First and foremost, he should have kept reminding himself of his original intention, what he had set out to achieve in the first place. If making things easier for his wife was his first priority, then by definition, that took precedence over a wounded pride or temporary feeling of disquiet!

He might have said: “Look Jill, I’m sorry, but let’s see what we can do; losing our cool won’t get us anywhere. I’ll pop back to the store to get some more noodles, or maybe I can borrow from our neighbor. Perhaps we could”

For Jill’s part, some quick thinking before Jack’s stormy exit would surely have helped. “Jack,” she might have said, “I know you only wanted to help me. I’m sorry I lost my flap…I must be overtired, I guess. You know what – let’s put your concoction in the freezer it will actually be a big help not having to worry about tomorrow’s supper! And you know, there are some dishes that taste better with white eggs, not brown”

The problem is as we said: a strong negative emotion will most likely generate a still stronger negative emotion. If it happens to you, will you be able to take one step back and direct your rational side to take charge, before hell breaks lose and everything spirals out of control?
