Amazingly, with the use of temperature training biofeedback and the daily use of Autogenic training phrases for relaxation, she was able to prevent most of headaches within 4 weeks of practice.

Or had one of those days when the beeping sound of an electronic dictionary steals classroom attention for that one crucial moment during the lesson? To make matters worse, some of these dictionaries have ring tones and other unnecessary sound effects that amplify the distractions.

From the Students’ perspective

In countries like China and Japan where electronic dictionaries are increasingly popular among EFL students, a teacher soon notices that intermediate level English students quickly head for their dictionaries every time they come across new vocabulary. This is understandable because at the intermediate levels of ESL/EFL learning especially, students are always concerned about vocabulary development.

Students do not realize that learning new vocabulary by translating actually slows down the learning process. Of course translation is always an easy way out; but also the grammar and translation methods of learning ESL/EFL are not the fastest means of mastering new language inputs. Hence the tendency to “um…”, “uh…” and forget new words learnt by such means never leaves.

From a Teacher’s Perspective

For a teacher in the classroom, this can be frustrating. Most often, trying to get the students off their dictionaries frustrates the teacher even further, because they soon go back to the dictionary the next time they hear a new word. This might dampen a teacher’s confidence as it might suggest that students are attaching more importance to their dictionaries than to the teacher. It can also mean that students don’t have confidence in their teacher’s ability to explain new vocabulary. From another perspective this might be a pointer to the fact that the teacher needs to teach the students more vocabulary acquisition skills.

Generally speaking, dictionaries should be the last point of reference for new words and expressions. We should always remember that 70-80% of all language can be communicated non-verbally. Figuring out meaning in a more contextual set up is more effective in learning and teaching of new language. Looking up the meaning of a new word should be a very brief and less frequent activity. Teachers should try to get students to explain new vocabulary in their own words after having explained the new word to them.
Teaching students other non-dictionary vocabulary learning methods would greatly help. So what are some non-dictionary ways of learning new vocabulary? To begin answering that question we need to look at advantages and disadvantages of dictionaries in ESL/EFL learning.

The Importance of Dictionaries in ESL/EFL Learning

Dictionaries are a very important language learning tool. They are as useful as they can be counter-productive. To make dictionaries useful, students must understand the role of dictionaries in English vocabulary building. So I guess you are now asking the question, “When and how do we use dictionaries for vocabulary building?”

The following points listed below are some of the general reasons why we should use dictionaries:

o In some cases of ESL/EFL teaching, words could be specific to a certain profession. Sometimes looking up professional jargons is unavoidable.

o There are situations where the vocabulary of a lesson can be new to students, even in their own native language.

o Sometimes we are unsure of the spelling of some words. Of course dictionaries are very useful at such times.

o Idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs can sometimes be too difficult to guess, thereby necessitating the use of dictionaries.

o Some classroom activities and the teaching of certain skills are planned around a dictionary.

o A dictionary can be a student’s study companion at home or away when the teacher is not around. Even then, the issue of when to use it is also very important.

There are many ways of understanding the meanings of new words and expressions without using the dictionary. Despite the importance of dictionaries in ESL/EFL learning, they should be used as the last resort especially in the classrooms. So what is the problem with using a dictionary often?

What’s the problem with dictionaries?

o Dictionaries stop students thinking in context:

Most often students want to isolate a new word and look it up, while forgetting to realize that words do not exist in isolation. Take a look at this sentence for example:

“Without the invention of microscopes, we would not have been able to carry out studies on tiny organisms.”

The word Microscope might be the new word here, but the words tiny organisms easily give a clue to the meaning of microscope and vice-versa. The tendency is for students to forget that the word microscope is easily understood within the context of that sentence. Whereas, a little bit of thinking in context would have done the trick.

o Dictionaries can be a great distraction:

This is especially true of electronic dictionaries and the classroom environment. Most students can’t resist the temptation of looking up a new word every time they come across one. The tendency is to want to stop to look it up, even when the teacher is trying to explain. The end result is always having a student asking the teacher a question on something he/she was explaining a minute ago, or simply deviating from the focus of a lesson – in some occasions the word they were looking up only turns out to be an unimportant word to the subject.

To make matters worse, electronic dictionaries with their beeping sounds and slightly distorted audio recordings can further increase a teacher’s frustration during a lesson. Suddenly an electronic voice is reading out a word from the corner of the classroom and before you know it, a brainwave of distraction occurs in the student’s minds causing them to miss out on what the teacher was explaining. Some teachers might even loose track of what they were saying especially when they hear these audio devices reading out English words in second-hand electronic voices. There is also grave concern here as to what type of electronic dictionaries are actually good for listening and pronunciation. When students prefer to listen carefully to an electronic dictionary, over the teacher, then serious questions arise.

o “Easy come, easy go”:

Every time a new word or expression is learnt without much thinking effort, there is always a propensity to forget soon after. A majority of English learners who use their dictionary all the time always find themselves learning the meaning of a new English word but finding it difficult to remember it the next time they come across it.
Hence the saying: “Easy Come, Easy Go”, becomes more evident here. On the other hand, when words are learnt with a bit more thinking effort, they are actually embossed in the student’s memory.

Non-dictionary ways of learning new vocabulary

A lot of English words we use today come from other languages. There is a lot of material about the etymology of English words, on the internet. There are lots of Latin and Greek influences on most European languages like English, French and Spanish.
You would be surprised at how this basic awareness of the origin of the English language can be of great help to your students. Many English prefixes and suffixes are derived from Latin and Greek. A basic knowledge of commonly used affixes will help students learn English vocabulary much faster without the need to always look up words.

So what are prefixes and suffixes?

A prefix is a letter or group of letters added to the beginning of a word to make a new word: In the word ‘”UNHAPPY”, ‘UN-‘ is a prefix added to HAPPY. UN- is a Latin word for NOT.
A suffix on the other hand is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to make another word. The suffix NESS added to the end of the word TOGETHER creates another word TOGETHERNESS.

Prefixes and suffixes are generally known as affixes. Affixes create new words, usually by modifying or changing the meaning of a root word. If we take a root word like HAPPY, we can see how affixes can change the meaning as in this example: prefix = UN, root word = HAPPY and suffix = NESS.

The end result is UNHAPPINESS.

Sometimes raising awareness to this word formation aspect of English can be the light that dispels the darkness of dictionary worship.

As they discuss, write down key words on the board. Later, give them the four articles and ask them to do a content analysis of the key words. They should work in teams and count how many times a particular word or its affix modification occurs in one article. This skill teaches students to always associate words with a particular reading context. Take this further by asking students to summarize the articles in writing, using the key words.

As earlier mentioned, words do not exist in isolation. They usually fall under a heading and have a specific role to play. Putting together words in the same group creates a systematic and often easy way of remembering vocabulary.

For example, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism = Religion. One way of doing word association is to brainstorm a topic. Usually the students would most often have heard something about the topic. If your lesson is about earthquakes for example, ask your students to give you as many words associated with earthquakes as possible. Further group the words into verbs, adjectives and nouns. This systematic approach to vocabulary learning helps arrange words in a systematic and easy-to-access order in the brain. If defragmentation of your computer’s hard drive and memory chip is the computer way of optimizing speed, then word association is the brain’s method of optimizing memory of words.

deaths as having people who know you exist and care about you.

Philosophy

There are four core approaches to life, see if you agree.

a) Determinism, it is all written in a big book when we are born and we
are puppets following a defined path. Fate or genes run the show.

b) Retribution, you get what you pay for, and if you break it you bought it.
Causing pain produces pain for you later. Karma.

c) Reciprocity, cause and effect, trial and error; your works produce

measurable results. Tit for tat means you have free choice, so take

responsibility. We produce our own security, control and certainty.

Brainwave Entrainment Dog Training – How to Teach Your ADD Dog to Relax

Have you ever met someone and thought to yourself “That person needs to learn to relax!”? Do you have certain routines in your life that relax you? Yoga? Exercise?

Many dogs also need to learn to relax. Unfortunately, they aren’t self analytical enough to tell themselves “I really need to learn to relax”. It is therefore our responsibility to teach them.

But how exactly do we teach a dog to relax?

The first thing is to start immediately!! It’s much easier to teach a puppy to relax than an adult dog set in her ways. But if you have an older dog, you can still teach her how to relax by instilling several new structures to her life.

Relaxation is a mental state. The brain emits tiny electrochemical impulses of various frequencies. When in a relaxed state these frequencies are much lower than when the brain is in an alert/aroused state.

Some dogs have been living the majority of their waking lives in an alert/aroused mental state. Their brains are seemingly stuck emitting these higher frequencies and it becomes very difficult for them to slow their brains down. It feeds upon itself and becomes a frantic, ADD type of energy that can be very difficult to live with as owners. And not that fun for the dog.

We need to change this balance and actively give them relaxation time. Here are some of the structures we will be using to teach your dog to relax:

Physical Exercise: Certainly a very important part of teaching your dog to relax is tiring them out. The brain needs to practice being relaxed, and by tiring a dog out you can begin changing the brain pattern so that it is more often in that relaxed state of mind. The type of physical exercise they get can make a difference, though. A game of fetch, for example can wind up putting your dog in a more aroused state of mind by the end of it. This really depends on the dog and it is our job to figure out what kind of exercise works best.

My favorite kind of exercises for dogs are swimming, jogging, and running alongside a bike. There is something about the steady, consistent motion of these activities that turns them into jobs for dogs, making them a combination of physical and mental exercise.

There is something to the old adage, ” A tired dog is a good dog”. But your dog needs more than just physical exercise.

Mental exercise: Interactive food toys/puzzle toys/chew toys. You should have multiple varieties of these toys for your dog. These are like crossword puzzles for dogs. Watch a dog working on a food toy or a bone… they are almost Zen-like in their focus. If you can get your dog to work on a chew toy/interactive toy for 1 hour per day, that’s a solid hour of putting your dog in a relaxed brain state. My favorite food toys are Kongs stuffed with kibble, big treats that are hard to remove, and a smear of unsweetened Peanut Butter or yogurt. You can then freeze the Kong to make them more challenging. I also like the Tug-a-Jug and Twist and Treat toys by Premier.

Training is also a great way to give your dog mental exercise. A few 5 minute sessions a day can go a long way in teaching your dog how to relax. The Settle behavior in particular is useful in teaching a dog to relax. By being able to put your dog in his most relaxed physical state… lying down on a comfy bed, it stands to reason that the mind will often follow.

Confinement: Your dog needs a place to relax. His own room. Cozy, with lots of soft bedding and nice toys. His job, when in this room, is to relax. I highly recommend using a crate for this. Feed him in the crate. Give his chew toys in the crate. Make the crate the magic place where good things always happen. Imagine being in a dimly lit room, soft music playing, big luxurious bed, glass of wine… how relaxing does that sound? That’s how your dog’s crate should feel to the dog.

While it seems nicer to give your dog free access to the home and the yard, in reality it can be damaging. The dog doesn’t know his role in the house, and is constantly searching for one. “Maybe I should bark at everyone walking down the street”(high frequency brain pattern), “I’ll stare out the window at squirrels” (high frequency brain pattern), “I’ll tear up the sofa” (high frequency brain pattern).

Your Personal Interactions: If you greet your dog in an excited, frantic manner, you will often get an excited, frantic response. Our dogs feed off of our energy. By maintaining a calm, balanced energy around our dogs we can begin to change his brainwaves.

Reward your dog for being relaxed. If your dog is constantly panting/pacing frantically, calmly reward him with a delicious treat the instant he stops for even a split second. Just a click or a calm yes. Praise and petting will usually elicit more excitement. We need to be neutral in rewarding calmness. When your dog is frantically jumping at the door to be let out, do you open the door? Then you are rewarding franticness! And if you reward franticness, you will keep seeing franticness! Instead, reward your dog by opening the door for showing calm behaviors. With some repetition and consistency, you will see your dog offering calm behaviors more and more often when she wants something.

Jobs: I’ve referred to giving the dog a job a number of times in this text. When a dog has a job to do, his mind becomes focused on one thing rather than frantically scattered all over the map. Chew toys, jogging, training exercises, Settle… these are all different kinds of jobs. These jobs give the dog a purpose… a place to focus their mental energy. A place to practice emitting those lower frequency electrochemical impulses.

Teaching your dog to relax can sometimes happen quickly with consistency in applying the rules. Or it may take time. Putting in the effort now however, will mean a happier life for you, and for your dog in the long run.

Learning how to let go of the limiting beliefs and behaviors that block our attempts at positive change is a process that requires due diligence.

If you’ve ever tried and failed to make changes in your behavior you’ll know that consciously directing your willpower alone is ineffective most of the time. For change to be effective and long-term, it has to happen with the cooperation of the subconscious mind where our ingrained beliefs, blocks and barriers reside. After all, your mind with all its negative thoughts, excuses and poor decisions is what created this mess in the first place!

Letting go of limitations requires a deeper level of investigation and correction as outlined in the following four steps:

willingness for self-appraisal to recognize how we identity with limitations
understanding and releasing the way we defend our old self concepts

Just Who Do You Think You Are?

Did you ever hear that line from your parents? From a parental perspective, it was meant as a signal to start toeing the line if one of the kids was “getting too big for your britches”.

Ironically, it’s a great question to get into the habit of asking yourself!

One of the reasons we find change so difficult is because we don’t have a clear, defined sense of identity based on our own values. Rather, we’ve formed our personality, characteristics and habitual traits from modeling our parents’ behavior and from assuming that their assessment of us was accurate. Which makes it very difficult to be true to ourselves because we’re too busy trying to be true to someone else’s idea of who we are. And that includes all of their fears, doubts and limitations.

As we repeatedly observed our parents and heard their opinions we formed beliefs about our own identity, and these beliefs then snuggled nicely into the subconscious mind.

With this constant repetition the thoughts and accompanying feelings then became hardwired into the nerve cells in our brains. This hard wiring of neurons then formed networks that allow us to do things automatically – like riding a bike. After a skill has been mastered, we don’t have to consciously think about it anymore as it’s become routine. Our conscious mind is now free to master new tasks while the subconscious looks after the old and familiar.

This is why we never really think about who we are. We believe we already know, but all we really know is what others have told us. As children, we believe this in order to fit in, be looked after and to feel safe in our environment.

But, what if they were wrong?

After all, who made parents the grand poobahs of knowing-all-there-is-to-know? What rule book were they given to determine how someone else should live, what their children can or can’t accomplish or how they need to behave in order to “get by”? Their limited beliefs came from the limited beliefs of their parents!

We See What We Want to See.

So, after we’ve mastered mimicking the thought patterns of our parents (or other caretakers) we now have an idea of who we are that fits nicely into their little box of limitations. We then like to defend this self concept, or identity, with a nifty little mind trick known as “confirmation bias”.

Confirmation bias is a tendency we have to seek and remember information that confirms our beliefs. This tendency to favor information selectively is even stronger with issues that have a strong emotional pull or deeply embedded beliefs. Like our beliefs, thoughts and feelings about our own identity.

We literally see what we want to see and hear what we want to hear. If we believe ideas with a powerful emotional charge we will actually interpret neutral information to support our existing mindset.

– “I’m not good enough to ____ (fill in the blank)”

– “It’s too hard to lose weight” or

– “Money’s hard to come by” etc. All become self-fulfilling prophecies as we gravitate to, or manufacture, evidence to support our deeply ingrained ideas.

No wonder it seems hard to change!

How to Let Go

To break out of this programmed cycle of thinking and feeling the same way, and getting the same results day after day, it’s necessary to initiate a new way of thinking based on self-enquiry.

By asking ourselves a series of new questions about who we are, we break the pattern of the old neural networks firing in the same manner from thinking the same thoughts.

By thinking new thoughts, our brain releases a new chemical signature into our bodies and we experience new feelings. These new feelings further break down the chain reaction of mechanical thinking and we start to experience new ideas – we’re quite truthfully changing our minds.

The practice of self-enquiry is as much about learning who you are not, as it is about learning who you are. To arrive at a new vision, you need to recognize who you’ve been.

Start by observing your habitual thoughts, emotions and reactions in familiar situations – particularly the ones that “push your buttons”. The more familiar you become with your automatic tendencies, the greater will be your ability to let them go.

A good idea is to jot down your observations as the day unfolds to get a clear, objective view of what happens internally in your customary environment. Do this for a week or two to get the full panorama of habitual thoughts and feelings.

After you’ve spent some time with this step, you should start your line of new questions. For the practical purposes of learning how to let go of limitations and breaking old habits, use questions designed to stimulate a new vision of who you’d like to be and to disconnect from the old, memorized pathways in the brain.

Become as detached from “you” as possible, and get into the frame of mind of objectively witnessing someone else. You want to feel curious, interested or reflective. Your inquiries should have an open format, so that multiple answers are possible. Some examples for speculation are:

Who am I? Am I these thoughts? Or am I these feelings?
Would it be possible for me to experience something different?
What would be a better way for me to deal with this?
What if I were more like that person (someone you admire), how would they handle this?
If I didn’t have to feel this way, how would I respond?
If I had the right conditions and resources, what would I do differently?

Your new line of self-enquiry will produce new, creative answers. Make sure to journal your answers as well and keep up with this practice for another week or two. Asking more questions will naturally produce more answers and options for you to try out.

Moving Beyond the Old

Now that you’ve witnessed the old you and you’ve created a new mindset, and your new mindset has produced some fresh alternatives for you to explore, it’s time to mentally rehearse the new you that you’d like to become.

By questioning how to let go of the past, you’ve cleared mental space to instil your ideal characteristics and values and become your authentic self. The person you want to be, free of limitations and restrictions.

To do this, you need to bypass the analytical mind that blocks access to the subconscious where our mechanical traits reside. A number of methods to go beyond this critical guardian are available such as hypnosis, self-hypnosis, meditation and relaxation exercises. Whatever works best for you to allow your brainwaves to gradually drop down from the normal (conscious, wakeful) state of Beta wave function into the slower realms of Alpha and Theta is required.

Once in this state of relaxed awareness you can direct your attention to produce the identity you desire. This is the act of visualization, and if performed consistently in the deeper levels of consciousness for a period of 3 to 4 weeks, your vision will become your newborn self concept that will in turn become your default settings.

Visualizing should incorporate all the qualities that you desire; the emotional states, the physical attributes, empowering attitudes, thinking processes, postures, health etc. Practice 10 – 20 minutes daily for best results. As you keep up with your practices you’ll notice three important results:

a) Your old behaviors will fall away of their own accord. Much different from past attempts to change, there will be little need for constant vigilance as your time and efforts in witnessing, self-enquiry and mental rehearsals have swept away the internal conflicts between the conscious and subconscious levels of your mind.

b) Consequently, the issue of discipline in monitoring your new behavior will be much easier than in the past as your mental practicing has already begun to bond and mechanize more appropriate neural networks.

c) Finally, outcomes in “real” situations will be different because your subconscious is already aligned with your new personality. And, as you realize your new results you’ll gain more confidence. Which will encourage positive self talk, which in turn promotes feelings of strength and assurance. The new self talk and positive feelings will then cause the brain to release new chemicals to reinforce your new state of being!

By taking the time to bring automatic thoughts, feelings and behavior into your conscious behavior you’ll see how you default to habitual responses and defend your own limitations with personal biases. Once you know what it is you’re holding onto, you can learn to let go though self-enquiry and thinking in new, imaginative ways to stimulate a strong, powerful vision of yourself. And through the daily practice of visualization, your intentions for new behaviors and attitudes will naturally fall into place and become the norm.
