Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.

Similar to larger part of iceberg that remains under the water, our subconscious mind resides deep down unknown to the range of conscious mind. Any sort of instrumentation cannot measure the power of subconscious. It is believed to be operating way below the planar existence of conscious mind and was unaware to human beings till the latter half of twentieth century. Researchers have learnt to locate an intangible controlling entity in the cortex, which they later termed as the ‘subconscious’. Pierre Janet and Sigmund Freud were the forefathers who initiated an interesting research to understand the unique functioning of the mind and all its forms.
Naturally everyone raised the question whether there are any methods to improve the human subconscious. The best answer to this question would be a simple ‘yes.’ Interestingly various methods had been circulating around the regions for about a few years for now. All this methods were based on the notion that brain could be conditioned to a state where it might be subjected to improvement to perform certain tasks.
Earlier researchers stressed on the importance of affirmative prayer and positive thinking to influence or harness the power of subconscious. Today medical professionals and psychologist utilize the power of methods like autosuggestions and autogenics. It literally trains the subconscious to accept positive or real messages through a mechanism called self-hypnosis. Technically discussing the subconscious get reprogrammed with positive inputs and thoughts.
People often associated this ease with which an individual falls into trance or train their body to work in synchronization with mind as religious experience. It should be appreciated that even in the myths; they recognized the power to free mind from the shackles of body to reach that peak of higher consciousness. This higher consciousness is a phase when the subconscious mind is open, the very chance to make it bend to the will of the individual.
The working of a subconscious mind can be compared to that of a soldier. It obediently takes instructions from the superior commander-the conscious mind and makes the sensory organs experience visual, auditory and other forms of stimulation. In general all our so called ‘phobias’, behaviors, attitudinal patterns etc are moulded by these set of messages passed down by the conscious mind to the subconscious.
Sometimes we tend to react for reasons we don’t know or able to control. It is because of the suppressed emotions in the subconscious mind. Earlier common public didn’t have the reach or knowledge to harness the power of subconscious or to submerge them into a meditative phase. However with the introduction of brainwave entrainment programs, we have the remote control to skip bad programmes in our lives and tune in live active programmes as per our needs. With this technology, even an average person is able to control the way he wants his subconscious to react and respond. This technology helps us to alter and remove all the bad traits, and habits that had been people from the kind so success that they wish to achieve.
Brainwave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat.
This ‘frequency following’ response of brainwave entrainment can be seen in action with those prone to epilepsy. If a strobe flashes at their seizure frequency, the brain will ‘entrain’ to the flashing light, resulting in a seizure.
On the positive side, this same mechanism is commonly used to induce many brainwave states; such as a trance, enhanced focus, relaxation, meditation or sleep induction. The brainwave entrainment effectively pushes the entire brain into a certain state.
Brainwave entrainment works for almost everyone. It is a great way to lead your mind into states that you might usually have difficulty reaching, allowing you to experience what those states feel like.
THE HYPE
There is a lot of marketing hype around brainwave entrainment. It is sold with promises of increasing IQ, promoting weight loss, ‘mind-tripping’, enhancing creativity, concentration, inducing spiritual states and more.
While these claims are not entirely true, they are not altogether false either. In practice, the claims are based on an overly-simplistic view of how the brain and the brainwaves function.
THE RUB
People are very seldom deficient in a certain brainwave type in all areas of their brain. Usually the distribution is much spottier, with an excess in one area and a deficiency in another.
We are all different, especially when it comes to the distribution of our brainwaves. Boosting a certain brainwave state may be beneficial for one person, and emotionally uncomfortable for another. Without knowing each person’s starting position, entrainment can be rather ‘hit and miss’.
If brainwave entrainment leaves you with unwanted side-effects (see below) or discomfort, you’re probably encouraging a range of brainwaves that are already excessive in some area of your brain. The way around this is to get a brain map to see what your brain’s strengths and weaknesses are, and see what (if any) brainwaves could use some encouragement.
